Sue Buckley and Gillian Bird from the world-renowned Portsmouth Down Syndrome Education Trust (DownsEd) will spend the day sharing their expertise with teachers, classroom assistants and parents of children with Down's syndrome aged between three and fourteen years old.

Our Speakers
Sue Buckley is a chartered psychologist with over 30 years experience. Her specialist area of expertise is cognitive development, particularly literacy and memory development. She was awarded the OBE for her services to special needs education in the Queen's birthday honours list in 2004. She will be giving our opening address on the specific profiles of children with Down's syndrome.
Gillian Bird is a psychologist with more than 20 years experience in the field of developmental disability. She has led the development of DownsEd consultancy, assessment and education services since 1991.
Numeracy and maths
This session will concentrate on the teaching of number and math, with practical ideas and suggestions on how best to encourage and help our children with Down's syndrome.
Literacy, reading and language
This will be a practical session on teaching reading and writing, with some emphasis on using reading to improve speech and language, even for non-readers
