dsOK Education Day PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 01 February 2016 Written by Colin Quemby

Saturday 8 October 2016

For forty five years, The Down's Syndrome Association has acquired invaluable knowledge and understanding on how children and adults born with Down's syndrome learn and gain in confidence. Our speakers are true experts at both primary and secondary levels, whether mainstream or special, and will guide professionals and parents on encouraging those with Down's syndrome to achieve their potential.

Cecilie MacKinnon will assist teachers to differentiate the curriculum and to include LSAs in preparing lessons. After lunch, Jane Beadman will give practical advice on positive behaviour, again relating to both primary and secondary pupils.

Parents and friends are asked to encourage the teachers and LSAs of your youngsters aged from pre-school to school leaving age to give their time to attend this day. We find professionals are particularly appreciative of the information given at our Education Days not only for the benefit of children and young people with Down's syndrome but for others in their classes as well. Parents are also invited, emphasising the importance of all working together for the benefit of the pupil.

The venue for this event is St. Philomena's School, Carshalton, SM5 2PB with parking on site and public transport nearby. A small charge will be made towards the substantial costs of this Education Day.

Two copies of the booking form have been posted to all members but due to a technical problem, we are unable to make the form available on the website. To obtain a copy, please send an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with the subject of October Booking Form.

Real Maths fun and progress

Maths Factor is strongly recommended by a parent member as a fun and effective way in which to motivate a pupil with Down's syndrome to enjoy maths, make real progress from Reception to the present level and want to do a little every day. The Maths Factor was created in 2010 by Carol Vorderman to encourage enjoyment of maths by ensuring progress, fun and achievement. Check out the Tower of Achievements on their website.

Until the end of November 2016, dsOK members have been offered a unique code - click here - to access a month's trial for £1.

As you may have read in dsOK News, it is now possible to donate directly to dsOK via the Virgin Giving website. This is a great way to contribute towards the work we do including the Information days and social events we organise throughout the year.

Better still, by donating through the website, gift aid is automatically reclaimed on our behalf. That means for every £1 a UK taxpayer donates, dsOK receives £1.25 at no extra cost to the donor!
